Huckleberry House works with Central Ohio’s youth and families who are dealing with issues like abuse, violence, neglect, poverty, and homelessness. 17-year old “Tyrae” had lived a difficult seven years before coming to the Huck House teen crisis shelter in October. By age 14, she dropped out of school and fell in to human trafficking, drugs and prostitution. Those six months convinced Tyrae that she wanted a different life.

The Huckleberry House Crisis Shelter offers a safe, temporary place to stay for teens ages 12–17 who are dealing with a difficult, disruptive, or dangerous situation at home.

Our Programs
The Huckleberry House Crisis Shelter is not a detention center, a jail, or a scared straight program. Last Thursday, April 25, approximately 200 Huckleberry Youth Programs supporters gathered at The Chapel @thechapelsf for Huckleberry`s Hearts in Harmony benefit. Built in 1905, the house was being used as rooming for Ohio State University students when Huckleberry House purchased it. The YOP Shop opens its doors on the bus line in the heart of the Linden community, giving young people a safe place to call or dropin, talk with a counselor, use the computers and phones, and get connected to other community resources. The Transitional Living Program begins, a four-stage, 18-month program to help older adolescents build the skills and confidence they need to live successfully on their own. Huckleberry House, an outgrowth of a two-year street ministry of the University Area Council of Churches, is founded in March. In July, with Douglas W. McCoard as executive director, Huck House opens the door to its first home, a house located at the corner of 17th Avenue and Summit Street, owned by Indianola United Methodist Church. Much of the historical data about Huckleberry's is on file in the City of San Francisco special library collection at the main library at the Civic Center.
Huck House offers a special Housing Program specifically for victims of domestic violence. We dedicate several of our apartments to people who have experienced domestic violence and we provide additional security and support, as well as around-the-clock access to workers trained in safety planning and victim services. We help residents learn to feel safe living their lives during the day and closing their eyes at night.The Domestic Violence Project is made possible by a grant from the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA). Huck House receives referrals from CHOICES, Central Ohio’s only domestic violence shelter. We will also accept referrals from the Center for Family Safety and Healing and the Salvation Army Human Trafficking Program.
In some cases, Huckleberry House might offer extended emergency shelter to a youth for up to three months until Franklin County Children Services helps that person find a permanent housing situation. With your guardian’s permission, you can attend school and go to work while you’re staying at Huck House. Sometimes we ask you to stay back from school on your first full day at Huck House so a counselor can meet with you, but we will give you a school excuse. Typically, you will attend school or work using a COTA pass, if your guardian gives permission.
You will be helping raise awarness and much needed funds for Huckleberry House’s proven programs. At Huck House, our goal is to support young people and families struggling with tough situations like homelessness, substance abuse, poverty, and violence. Because we know everyone’s problems are unique, we offer a variety of programs that can help.
And we work relentlessly to ensure all young people in our community have access to a safe home environment as well as the guidance they need to develop skills and find resources that can help them navigate and cope with the pressures of life. Located on Page Street (at Lyon) in San Francisco, Huckleberry House is the oldest program for runaway and homeless youth in the country. Program goals are to alleviate problems of runaway and homeless youth, reunite youth with their families, empower youth to identify healthy lifestyle alternatives and develop positive decision-making. Our Youth Outreach team can bring services and support to you at our YOP Shop, at a community center, or even on the street.
Even with these great strides, Tyrae and her mom had a strained relationship and Tyrae found herself on her own, back on the streets and scared. She met a Huck House youth outreach worker who took her to the teen shelter. The outreach worker and crisis staff worked for Tyrae to enter Huck House’s transitional living program (TLP). The Housing Program is all about building the skills you need for a better future.
The taste of the two berries is also very similar, however, huckleberries tend to be more tart. Turns out, the term huckleberry actually refers to several different plants that grow in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, particularly in Montana. These plants all belong to the Ericaceae family, a family of flowering plants all of which bear small berries that range in color from red to blue to black. Huckleberry House is ready to help you or someone you know with difficult situations like abuse, violence, neglect, poverty, and homeless.
We believe, and we know you do too, that housing is more than a roof over our heads. It is a safe haven where youth can heal, recover, and grow. Homestead Cos., a Columbus apartment rental agency, contacted Huckleberry House in the spring about doing a volunteer day at the shelter. In 1976, Huckleberry House moved its services into a house on Hamlet Street, evolving from the street outreach mission on which the nonprofit agency was founded six years prior.
You can also attend most extracurricular activities and go on outings with family members or family friends, if your guardian agrees. However, our staff might put some limits on how many outings or how long you can be gone. It’s important to remember that the Crisis Shelter is a voluntary program.
